India, Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi, Dev Deepawali festival, Hindu devotees lighting Om shaped oil lamps The Dev Deepavali festival (litterally the Diwali of the Gods) is celebrated on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartika (November - December) 15 days after Diwali. The steps of all the ghats (stairs) on the riverfront of the Ganges are lit with thousands of earthen lamps (diyas) in honour of goddess Ganga.The gods are believed to descend on earth to bathe in the Ganges on this day.
