Search Tips

Keywords:

Enter a keyword or multiple keywords (e.g. london skyline) into the search box which is located at the top right of every page on the site and click 'search'. You can also enter a photographer name or image number in the search box; e.g, 'Peter Adams' or 'FRA8036AW'

Search within results:

To look for a specific subject within the results of your existing search, enter another keyword or keywords into the Search Box and select the Within Results button to the right of the Search box and click 'search'. For example, if your original search was for 'Maasai Mara', you could enter the keyword 'Lion' and select 'Within Results' to find all images in the existing search results that feature lions located in the Maasai Mara.

AND, OR and AND NOT searches:

You can use the Boolean operators AND, OR and AND NOT in the main search box to refine your searches (or use the 3 search boxes in the advanced search panel on the left when you click 'search' on the toolbar or when you are already on the search results page). The and/or/and not operators work as follows;

'Amazon and rainforest' displays images containing both the keywords 'Amazon' and 'rainforest', i.e. it will show images of the Amazon rainforest.

'Rainforest and not Brazil' displays images containing the keyword 'rainforest' but excludes images containing the keyword 'Brazil' from the search.

'River or Lake' displays images with keywords containing either 'River' or 'Lake', i.e. it will show images of both rivers and lakes.

Filters:

You can filter the search request by clicking filters to the right of the search box and selecting from the following 4 options;

Rights: Rights Managed and/or Royalty Free
Release: Model Release and/or Property Release
Orientation: Select from horizontal, square, vertical and/or panoramic
Colour: Colour and/or Black & White

If all the options are left blank no filter is applied.

If you make a search with filters applied you'll see a red label marked 'Filtered' in the panel above the search results when they are displayed. If you click this you then have the option to repeat the search again without the filters applied.

Extra Search Techniques

Wildcards:

You may use single character wildcards (?) and multiple character wildcards (*) in your searches. This is especially useful if you are unsure of spelling. Please note that wildcard searches may take longer to execute.

Typing in lion* keywords lion, lioness, lionfish, etc. In general this is a "starts with" search requesting the display of all images with keywords spelled beginning with the letters prior to the * wildcard.

Typing in *fly displays images with the keyword butterfly, mayfly, dragonfly or any other keyword ending with fly. In general this is an "ends with" search requesting the display of any images with keywords spelled ending with the letters following the * wildcard

If you are unsure of the spelling of a word, you can put the wild card in the middle: ie. Reyk*vik will find Reykjavik
