Tom Mackie’s understanding of light and perspective and his bold use of colour have established him over the last 35 years as one of the world’s leading landscape photographers. His work has been featured in international publications, including National Geographic Traveller, Lonely Planet, Sunday Times Travel Magazine, and he is also a regular contributor to the photographic press, including N Photo magazine and Amateur Photographer. After completing a degree in commercial imaging in his native Iowa, Tom began his career with a five-year stint as an industrial and commercial photographer in Los Angeles. This gave him the opportunity to travel extensively through the vast, cinemascope terrain of the Western States and ignited a life-long passion for landscapes, which he now passes on through his acclaimed workshops.
In 1985 Tom moved to the UK to pursue a full-time career as a landscape photographer, and rapidly made his name with calendars, books, prints, posters, cards and editorial work for a wide range of clients. Accolades followed from The British Institute of Professional Photographers, the Ilford Awards and the Business Calendar Awards, and inclusion in the book The World’s Top Photographers: Landscape, published by RotoVision and most recently Masters of Landscape Photography published by Ammonite Press. The 4×5 field camera was his main format of choice until going digital in 2006. He used Canon’s until changing to the Nikon D800, D810 and now the Nikon D850.
He is the author of two best-selling books – Photos With Impact and Tom Mackie’s Landscape Photography Secrets. His latest is Digital SLR Experts: Landscapes, a collaboration with four other top landscape photographers. His YouTube channel, Landscape Photography iQ is also a must-watch for all photographers who are keen to improve their landscape photography skills. Tom splits his time between his home in Norwich and locations all over the world, for commissions, stock shoots and photography workshops. His corporate affiliations are with LowePro backpacks, Gitzo tripods, Lee Filters, X-rite Colour Management and Skylum Luminar processing software. Tom enjoys kayaking and mountain biking.
