Gavin Hellier is an award-winning professional photographer based in Bristol, England. He specialises in landscape, travel and ethnic portraits. Having studied photography, completing a degree in commercial advertising, Gavin set out as a photographer with a niche cruise line. He went on to manage the photographers across a fleet of ships. This stimulated a desire to spend more time documenting remote places and peoples and the next step was inevitable, he became an independent travel photographer, with the freedom to create his own itineraries and travel extensively.
Gavin has now worked in over one hundred countries. To extend his own operation in one of his favourite regions, the Far East, he lived in Singapore and Japan for several years. His dynamic style of imagery features the creative use of natural light and bold colour, producing classic iconic shots and more unusual perspectives. This approach has proved successful in his 20 years of shooting on assignment and for leading stock agencies, including AWL.
In addition to his commercial assignments his work has been published worldwide in advertising campaigns, books, magazines, scientific journals, newspapers and travel publications. Additionally Gavin sells art prints and offers one to one tutorials to aspiring photographers. Although travel photography remains his greatest passion, Gavin regards himself as a photographer with diverse interests and a broad portfolio. By eschewing the constraints of a specific genre, he is free to gravitate to anything that visually inspires him.
CAA PfCO certified to operate SUA (drones), aerial photography has recently become a passion and when not on the road capturing images Gavin enjoys anything mountain related, skiing, hiking, camping and mountain biking.
